1:41 am - The last Generation or, a bit of nostalgia
|
I have been pondering this topic alot lately, and just finished discussing it with Styggian on the phone,
however, let me preface, that this is the same with every generation, but we, have the privilege of living during the time of a technology explosion, My grandparents, (i have much older grandparents than most my age) were all born near the turn of the prior century, they were born into a world, where every third home may have had a telephone, automobiles were rare, and usually electric or steam powered, or deisel (The Benz MotorenWagen) Steam and Electric? things were much greener then it would seem. there was no Television or radio, or Electric can openers, microwaves, iPods, Internet, Roombas, or anything of that like, That generation was even unaware of the existence of Pluto and the expanding universe model of cosmology, in a hundred years since that time, we have achieved so much as a civilization, and yet we still teeter totter on the edge of annihilation, most is our own doing, but there are some outside factors that could contribute to our demise, EG A nearby Gamma Ray burst. of course, we cannot last forever, as the eventual heat death of the universe will put a quick end to everything as all our atoms disperse at zero Kelvin, but alas, that far in the future, evolution will have turned us into something completely unrecognizable as a human, unless we destroy ourselves first,
but i digress,
what i really wanted to discuss was now, the present.
my generation, consisting of people 5 years older and 5 years younger than myself, will be the last group to actually be familiar with some things most people take for granted or have already forgotten, you may recognise several of the items on my following list, some of you younger types will not.
We are the last generation to experience:
- Computers with green Or yellow Screens
- a world without the internet
- a world without cell phones
- unlocking your car or house with a metal key, keys will become obsolete i think in the next 5 years, one of my cars a 99 model, already did away with a mechanical key for an electronic one even then.
- magnetic tape as a standard video/audio/data storage medium
- LP's
- All wood architecture
- Cathode ray tubes
- paying bills by mail
- bulletin board services
- a world without GPS
- a nine planet solar system model
- Actual film for a camera
- gas prices under 1 dollar
- incandescent light bulbs
- Drafting and designing by hand or actually being able to draw to be in such a field
- television programmes that arent reality based
- New coke
- Vehicles without airbags
- The Space shuttle
- Movies on film
That is all i can ponder at the moment, it makes me feel very nostalgic, as i am sure it will for you too. is there anything you fondly look back on that i left out? let me know, I encourage you to add in your own thoughts. Thanks
coming to-morrow, A Movie review of "Everything is Illuminated" and a rant on creationism

7:38 am - VAMPIRA DIES AT 86
|
LOS ANGELES - Maila Nurmi, an actress who created the glamorous ghoul Vampira in the 1950s, was found dead in her Hollywood home Thursday. She was 86. The cause of death was still being investigated, said Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County coroner's office. In the early days of television, Ms. Nurmi created the character Vampira to host late-night fright films. Layering on her own brand of camp, Vampira played with her pet tarantula, gave gruesome recipes for vampire cocktails and bathed in a boiling caldron. With a knack for double-entendre and the requisite blood-chilling scream, Vampira was a hit. The character won Ms. Nurmi fame and a dedicated cult following. Ms. Nurmi claimed Vampira was the uncredited inspiration for later ghoulish yet glamorous female characters in film and on television.
